Actually, if I had someone working on my house (I don't have one right now; I rent an apartment) I would assume they'd use the bathroom in the house. That just seems like the normal thing to do.

What happened one day was someone clearly had a bad shit attack and destroyed a toilet. Like toilet, seat, cistern - covered. Not even tried to hide/clean it.

Had to have a word with the foreman and said ‘look using the toilets is fine, but what’s upstairs is not. I expect it cleaned and nothing will be said going forward’.

Foreman confused goes upstairs to look, and all you hear is a very loud ‘ah Jesus Christ!’ And he comes back red in the face apologising. All good like, it wasn’t him (clearly) and it was cleaned by the next day.

Toilets are for humans, not animals.

One time my bf and I got a microwave from a friend, well there must have been a fire in there at some point as when we got it home to inspect there was damage on the inside ceiling of it. So we took it to his work in the night and left it by a bin we knew it would be taken away from.

When we were walking away my bf looked back and got really, really sad about leaving the microwave alone in the cold on the pavement.

He's such an emotionally sentimental man, it's something I love about him. But I hate how things like that can hurt him so.

He built a bar for a customer and she asked him to use the basemen egress window to enter the house. He promptly told her to pound sand. We were willing to use a basement door of course. It’s often easier and we get it, bringing material and stuff through the front DOOR can can have its side effects like fucking up other walls and doors and stuff. But fuck you lady we aren’t animals. And yes, there were many people who did not want us using their bathroom.

Yep. Normally if they are a douche and don't want you in the house you just grab the truck and rip to a coffee shop or whatever. But with concrete specifically it doesn't always work that way as the truck was scheduled to arrive soon

Yes, it's actually mixed before hand and the truck mixes it continuously in order to keep it usable as long as possible, various factors can affect the time you have to get it down and finished, the ratio of original mix, temperature, humidity, distance from the plant, plus many others. But essentially yes, and if the concrete hardens too fast there is not really a way to save the job. All the concrete has to be ripped back out and re done

Well, well, well...I do have a fitting story for this.

My dad was doing a lot of work on the house and had hired some of the guys who look for work around Home Depots. He told them if they needed to use the restroom, to use the upstairs bathroom, as the downstairs one was also being renovated. Apparently, one of the guys wasn't listening and took a huge dump in the downstairs restroom.

Not only was the toilet not connected because it was the part that was under renovation, it was actually placed in the shower while the floor tiliny was being worked on.

The one thing I kindof understand is if you have a crew outside like digging and pouring concrete and they are physically super dirty and have mud and rocks and concrete all over, I don’t want my bathroom all jacked up afterwards. One of my acquaintances is getting work done on their roof and lives on a small acre with big open spaces/tree coverage surrounding the house. Tradesman needed to doodoo so he popped a squat on the grass and left all the toilet paper behind. Not even in the woods on a slight hill with a bunch more privacy- total rookie move.

So she investigates and yeah, the builders had been using the hedges as a latrine. She had seen them go in once or twice but assumed they were just going in to piss. Nope, using it for all their business. So after using a shovel, bag and several litres of bleach to clean out behind the hedges, she told the foreman in no uncertain terms that they must come inside to use the toilet.

I work is biohazard remediation. Crime scene cleanups, suicides, sewage backups all over the house. Been doing this for 8 years, and one job takes the cake for pettiest and funniest.

We got a call from some irate homeowner who was having some work done on their house. Apparently a member of the contractor's crew had taken a dump in their compost pile. The worker was probably picked up by a gas station (where this is in Texas, that's a common practice), and didn't speak much English. So what I gleaned from our conversation is that this guy was kinda racist and pretty viscious, so it wouldn't surprise me if the worker was a little trepidatious about asking to come in and use the shitter.

I explained that in a compost pile, you'd actually be doing more harm than good spraying antimicrobial on it outside, and that the poop could actually be good for the pile. But he was insistent that it was the principle of the matter, and he was actively trying to get the worker himself (not the contractor) to pay for damages and to be fired. So...

I took this new guy out to a house to pick up a single turd out of a turd pile and spritz the whole thing with a thyme-based botanical antimicrobial. Whole process took about 30 seconds. I charged him time and materials at a 2 hour minimum for a "biohazard remediation" for 2 on-site techs. $2000. Easiest money I ever made.

It comes down to how long the job is. On a job that will be more than a few days or will have several workers I ask the customer whether they prefer a portable out front or to allow workers to use the house toilet. As a contractor I prefer to bring in the portable to avoid problems. For instance, while a homes sewer may work just fine for a retiree couple 10 men can put a strain on it over the course of a week or two.

Until I had a crew outside doing a full day job and one knocked on the door like, "Sir, I'm so sorry. I wouldn't normally ask, but can I please use your restroom?" "of course. Third door on the left, sorry if it's dirty... I have three kids."

Gave the same crew a case of cold gatorade out of the fridge as I heard one complain his was hot and he wanted to stop on the way back. Treat people like people... it's not hard.

Whenever I have people over doing jobs for me, like plumbing, electric, garden or whatever, you can bet that they'll have access to water, coffee, tea and depending on how long they're at my house, I'll even offer fresh cookies or sandwiches. Hell, I once even ordered pizza for a group going the extra mile while working in my garden.

Those are people, human beings, just like yourself. They're doing a job you can't or don't want to do. Least you can do is treating them with respect. And letting them use your bathroom.

There were some people doing some work here where I live (I rent). It didn't really occur to me until the 3rd day when I overheard the apprentice say he needed to go to the toilet and his boss told him to wait. Turns out when they left at lunch they were going to the public toilet. If they asked I would've let them. The next day I offered them both hot and cold drinks, cookies and use of the bathroom. They declined all except for a little boiling water at lunch time. His coffee in his Thermos was apparently too strong and he wanted to add more water to weaken it a little. My only ask was that he come through the back door because he had been working in the Fadden and his shoes were all muddy. I didn't want them on the carpet.

Back when I was a homeowner, I hired a house-painting crew, and the man who showed up happened to be black. As they were packing up, the owner said maybe 1 person in 5 didn't make any kind of comments about it, and even fewer would let him in the house to use the bathroom (although they would let white employees in without hesitation). And this was ca. 2000!

I was that 1 person in 5, which was why he told me about it.

I was a manager at an IT services company in the past both in CA and later in TN. Anyway, in TN we had this rich business owner type and as was not terribly uncommon we would sometimes do IT project at business owners homes as well (camera installations, internet upgrades, etc). One time I was there with one of our other engineers who happened to be black and the owner made a comment to the effect that the guy with me had to use the staff bathroom around by the kitchen but I could use the bathroom right there. I was like, excuse me did I hear correctly and they confirmed. I turned to my colleague and was like grab your gear we are leaving, and told the owner that’s it we aren’t doing any more work for you or your company because you are racist. I technically didn’t have the authority to fire a client like that but was willing to bet my job that our owner would agree (he did). The worst part was that my colleague was like “oh yeah, that’s a common thing when we work in these big estate type houses, I just don’t make a deal out of it because I don’t want to lose my job”.

I definitely still let trades use our bathroom, but not all of them are courteous about it. We had a moving company come in to move our house last year and one of the guys took a massive crap in our basement toilet and plugged it, then didn't say anything so we could fix it. Thankfully my husband caught it while doing a once over before he drove off or the basement might have been flooded before we sold the house.

I’m a construction worker. You wouldn’t believe how often people treat us like complete garbage. I’ve been in line at Tim Hortons to get a coffee on my break and have overheard people saying construction workers shouldn’t be allowed to be served because now they have to wait longer. I just try to calm the urge to drive my fist into their face and feel a little better when I cash my large pay cheque on my 3 day weekend.

I don’t get it, when I hired you to do a job in my house (where I live) and I want it to be done well (because again, I live there) it’s in my best interest to make sure you are content to be working there. Also I am not a total dick, but even if were it’s in my best interest to make sure you are happy to work for me.

Everyone who does a job in my house gets offered something to drink, a cup of coffee or tea. Snack if I have them. When it’s hot out I’ll even give the delivery guy a popsicle or a cold bottle of water. For some reason my packages always arrive in good condition.

There's plenty of people to be ashamed of. Some time ago, I've finally was able to hire an cleaning lady. She was concerned about the heat (the climate was very hot in deed) and I've just said to her: I have 3 air conditioners at my house. If you wish, I can turn on all of them, no worries. When she was really here, she didn't said anything about and started to clean. I've just turned all of them to her. At the middle of it, she asked for cold water. I've just told her: there's that in the fridge, but if you wish, there's juice in there as well and she could take it.

At the end of her job, she said that I was the first of her clients to do that for her. Why people just deny basic stuff for the people doing something for them, beats me. Those people aren't slaves and respect is the bare minimum that should be given for them, including their food.

As an appliance repair technician and a home theater installer for 20 years now. I appreciate this thread so much. I always try not to use a client's bathroom but I drink a lot of water. Especially in the summer. If I had to find a place to pee 4-5 times a day it could really be a pain. I will ask to pee while the washer is filling up and I'd say 90% of the time clients are "sure no problem " the rest of the time it is the worst kind of person. One that truly thinks their shit don't stink. Usually has a very expensive home. They always reply " I'd rather you not" when i have asked. I usually just say ok and try to leave asap. While I'm there tho. It's very uncomfortable .

My view??

Look, when a tradesman enters one's house to perform works, it is assumed that, being a human being with bodily functions, they will require use of the amenities, including the toilet.

Now, I am a tradesman myself, however the trade I am in doesn't require extended periods of time being spent on the customers property. Generally, therefore, I rarely require use of the toilet while on the job. But a construction worker will naturally be spending multiple hours on one job, necessitating their use of the toilet facilities while on task.

Don't like it? Don't get construction done.
