Yep I work the register sometimes and when I do I usually don't even bother doing this. The time I would save by giving them less bills back is completely ruined by the time I spend waiting for their brain to realize what I'm asking them. The only time I'll ever do this is if we don't have enough 1s to get through the day.
Then again sometimes the customer is smart and focused on the interaction, sees their total, and gives me exact change or enough small bills to where I can give them their paper change in increments of 5. If this is you, I love you. Thank you.

Those pens are worthless. Fake bills just feel wrong because real money has raised ink so it's textured. My check was always the number on the bottom right, as you tilt the bill the color of the number will shift (10s and above). Was a teller at a bank.

I used to remind people who made that joke that there are places that will not take the cash after someone says that. The risk was that if they took it and it turned out to be fake, the person could argue that they told the cashier they made it that morning and get away with it, because the cashier knew it was fake when they accepted it as a trade. It is just a joke that is in poor taste anymore, much like joking about shoplifting.

You can say no, and give out change like normal. Cashiers do have some control over the situation unlike what many bosses will say. I’ve been there too. Situations like this could also mean the customer is trying to pull a quick slide of hand scam on you as well. To me it’s just better to keep it simple, and for me, who is slow it’s math, that means giving back the change in the most simple way possible.

Okay, so it's like:
You have 20 in cash. You gotta pay only 11.
Just remember 20 - 11 = 9
Now the cashier asks for $1 and adds it to the 20 to make it 21. The reason is that they could just return the balance as a note of 10, rather than as 9 (or 5$ + 4 1$ bills)
Since 21 - 11 = 10
It's just easier to return the balance as $10

That's happened to me in Europe. I needed to pay 6€ while having 10€ banknote. I gave 10€ and 1€ coin then asked for a 5€. The cashier asked me why am I paying more and started to explain how 6€ is less than 10€ like I don't know about numbers.

When I was in Southern France, there was a machine to exchange paper bill with coins. At that time I thought I'd need some coins to pay for bus fares so I put a 20€, and it gives me 9 2€ coins. A few moments of confusion later I see the fine prints on the machine saying it takes 2€ for each exchange.

Watched this happen to my coworker in real time when i worked at a safety boot store. Store was busy af, sketchy dude comes in to buy something, leaves, then comes back to say that he was shorted change because he gave a $20 and not a $10.. Coworker started to try and count it out, but it was so busy, they said fuck it and gave the dude a $10 bill. We were $10 short at end of shift.
Since then, I learned that when you're dealing with cash and have a busy rush, stick the cash in a separate spot in the register so that you can make it easier to verify, rather than counting the whole register out.

I always take the money, close the check to tell me the change, then look at the bill one more time in my left hand before I put it away and get the change. The guy thought that if he kept arguing with me he’d break my confidence and I’d back down. I didn’t and then he was embarrassed in front of his friends. Asshole.

Type in the exact amount she gave you.
Goes faster.
The computer will tell you exactly change.
Speak out loud how much she gave you, right back to her, as you type it in. That can help the customers realize they may be didn't do anything helpful or help them understand how much they gave you.
"Oh, 20.25 it is...and...your change is...$6. Here is $1 and $5 for a total back of $6. Thank you! Appreciate your business."
Train yourself to speak this way and you'll prevent arguments and confusion.

Don't forget - the tendered amount goes on top of the till, not into the cash register, until the change is given and received. That way there is no argument about what bills were given ("But I gave you a $20, not a $10" scam). It's been a long time since I worked a register, but some things you don't forget.

I was a cashier on and off for years many moons ago and same for me. I'm so focused on everything I have to do in that moment especially if I have another customer right after them, that your brain just goes blank with that. I swear some did it on purpose to test you or something lol. Seems like more people than not use cards now but then (15-20 years ago) it was a mixed bag. Now I'm sure it would be easier with how many people use cards but I'm sure there a few that still use cash.

I've been on the other side of this, where the cashier is confused. Total is, say, $16.25, I hand them a 20, a 1 and a quarter, and they're like… "wtf why don't you just give me the 20". Usually they just shrug, punch in whatever amount I handed them, and let the register tell them how much to give back in change.

It’s because in this example the change is $9, so that’s a a $5 bill and 4 $1 dollar bills. 5 pieces of paper in total. But if they give an extra dollar then the change will be $10, so the cashier can just give them a single $10 bill as change.

It's exactly the same as you were paying with a bill of 21$ (if existed). Maybe the cashier doesn't have enough bills and coins to give you 9$ back, but he/she has a 10$ bill. But the only way to give you 10$ is if you pay 21$. As simple as that.
